fresh from the Mansion...

Fresh off the laptop of the latest and greatest Toronto (Ontario, Canada...fool.) producer/ dj extraordinaire is a cheeky take on the moderately untouched Louis La Roche tune "Get On Down" -

Violca Mansion (nee Helder) has been manically churning out tracks along side a personal local fave of mine, Barletta, for the better part of what...5, 6, 7 months now..geez.
They still seem so fresh and new every time another track comes out.
The great part is they happily dole out their tunes like lollipops to eager children - and the kids simply love it.

a simple sample for now..
I'll do a much bigger piece later on friends...

love past.

it's so nice
to wake up in the morning
all alone
and not have to tell somebody
you love them
when you don't love them
any more.

Love Poem by Richard Brautigan

I can't write any thing terribly compelling, but I suppose I can say that these songs accurately express how "love" makes me feel. All the bullshit, overpowering emotion and overwhelming happiness.
No, I'm not on my period (ew), nor did I recently watch "27 Dresses".
I guess I'm just reeeeeally nostalgic and still have a few heartaches I just can't seem to shake.

kleer my throat.

Andreas Kleerup, a loveable Swede, has brought me from my post-summer slump with zome great remixes. I'm mean SURE! he did a remix of Every Heartbeat, but the added strings sound beautiful and SURE! he sometimes sounds like Georgio Moroder, but has that ever been a bad thing??!

Look I'm going to spare you (and me) the longwinded explanation of how this guy comlpetely captures every sound I want to hear in a song at the exact right moment and why he's the perfect artist to bring from summer warmth to winter cool.

Just play Thnku4nthn REALLY loud.

Way down south

The other day I saw a lady with a bag that said: Canada is cool, literally.

If these are the kind of fashion statements we are making, then I am making my South Africa is hot bag tomorrow.

S.A. is the new hot spot for churning out massive electronic/booty/funk tracks. Their remixing is hard and rhythmic, dance-inducing and just generally sexy music.

Check out this mix from Cape Town's ORLANDO DOOM. Notice the Thunderheist track and the last track which is Cape Town's Sweat.X, remixed by Purple Crush.

Tracklisting:

the chemical brothers – hey boy hey girl (soulwax remix)
the black ghosts – anyway (fake blood remix)
thunderheist – jerk it ( JOTS remix)
muse – knights of cydonia (ocelot remix)
switch – every second counts (ocelot remix)
snowden – between the rent (the glamour remix)
the bumblebeez – rio (boy 8-bit remix)
bloc party – mercury (herve is in disarray remix)
sweat.x – jack (purple crush pussy scheme remix)

Sweat.X start their European tour off in London on September the 5th at Fabric. One look at the videos on their myspace page and you'll want to be in that crowd.

To quote them, "This dance ain't for everyone, only the sexy people. So all you fly mothers get on out there and dance."

Little Boots

Little Boots, are you a DJ or a singer?
I don't even care now, she's bound to be amazing as long as she's got something musical in her hands.

You can check her out this weekend at the OFFSET festival just outside London, like I will be. After that she's playing everything from Topshop to the Electronik Festival in Paris. But, if you're patient, rumor is she'll be playing her first proper gig (not DJ set) at the October Play it by Ear in Camden. Keep updated on their myspace.

And a little something extra, just to seal the deal:

cool like that....

Toronto, Toronto, Toronto....
What fine fine producers you keep spitting out. Look at you, going and showing the world we aren't a bunch of eskimo-pies living is igloos and wearing red-flannel. (Although, it is dreadfully trendy right now.) We know how to remix the mega-hits, we know how to create original ghetto bass and rap, and now that audio programming software and computers are available for less than a cup of coffee a day (you can feed a child with that too hmm!) we have Joe-Know-How's making delicious beats and sample-heavy tunes from within the confines of their bedrooms....or poolside, if you have wi-fi.

Up and coming local hero TT is making his way through the blog-sphere right, doing what any smart bedroom producer would do and shopping this shit around like their's no tomorrow.
Check it out and love or hate, let him know.... right here.

unlike life.

Annie, Sia, Shapeshifters, Sneaky Sound System, Alan Braxe, Thomas Bangalter, Van She and a bajillion other artists all go to this respectable Parisian gentleman for the best electro and big room remixes.
I've been playing this tune at least a once a week and I keep finding more and more reasons to love Lifelike.

Like the retro loving house gods of yesteryears (see: Mylo), we experience a wall of sound using chunky side-chained bass lines that stay away from the overly abrasive electro sounds we're kind of, well, getting used to. He's like French, but not too French!

Since it's laundry night and I am physically sore from being in the beautiful city of Montreal over the long weekend I'm only posting two tracks.
I'm sorry...?

Because I love you...

I'd love to have the satisfaction of being the first one to introduce you to F Y O F, but the chance of you having passed it by for this long is slim.

3 reasons to check out this blog if you've somehow missed the boat:

1. It's simple, streamline and straight to the music-loving point.
2. The tagging system.
3. The consistent, frequent and on-the-mark posts beamed straight to us from Madrid daily.

The Monarch hosts Mac 3000

It feels like just yesterday I was trying to rip the yet-t0-be-released Metronomy tracks off their myspace page. Now, I'm super pumped to see that Mac 3000 has produced a spectacular re-edit of Radio Ladio.

Mac 3000 plays the night away at Play it by Ear at the Monarch Saturday night. He's alongside Grovesner, Stricken City and Hemme Fatale. Camden Town, London 8pm-2am.

House of Cards

I couldn't resist sharing this.

Follow this link to access the interactive clip.
Worth checking out!

For their new release Radiohead are bringing us into the future of entertainment. "Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes.".

It makes me feel as though we aren't too far from realistic, interactive, 3D videos which can be projected and enjoyed in the comfort of our homes.  I suppose once SMD release one of these people will really start thinking of the opportunities at hand.

All the technical stuff is explained here, complete with an explanation of how to further manipulate the video.

House party.

It's no secret that the majority of us like going to house parties, having a drink and a dance. This can at times be difficult if the host of said parties lacks good music taste or friends with said taste. Now, do your mates a favour and bring along this little mix to unite the crowd at the next bash you crash/throw.

I have a feeling that the ball cap wearing, dancehall loving crowd in Toronto will be fans of Rock Steady Drew already. Check out his mix if you haven't already.

thunderheist - jerk it from thatgo on Vimeo.

ummmmmmmmmm.....so i copied this video link from Palmsout so fast i didn't even know if my body could control itself.
seriously one of the BEST videos i have seen in a long time. Comparable to when I saw my first Orbital or Chemical Brothers video (see: Setting Sun)

SHIT!
Also, these cats are from Toronto. I've had Isis (the vocalist) yell my ear at least a handful of times. Holy lord, can that woman drink.

JERK IT.
holy lord this so HOT!

Sunday, June 8, 2008

32 degrees celsius/89 degrees fahrenheit.

Toronto.
The past 2 days have been the hottest days (for June temperatures) since 195something.
The people are overjoyed. We love our heat here in Toronto, at least for the first two weeks.
I, for one, am looking forward to having my industrial fan going full blast while I sleep.

In keeping with my personal philosophy of "There's Song For Every Occasion", Dsico
seems to have the perfect tune for the perfect beginning to a perfect (hopefully) summer.
GOD, I LOVE COVER SONGS!!

Some Like It Hot - Dsico

Dsico caught my attention maybe a year ago, doing remixes for ROC, Ollo and releasing some random one off ep's.

After a HUGE hiatus (I check his site bi-monthly probably.....so what?!) he's back with a new (unreleased) album. An intelligent man is one that utilizes the Internet. As such the whole album is download-able at his site.

If you just want to taste the milk before buying the cow, try out this song for now...

Makes me want smoked meat.

The reason I like Montreal so much is because the residents mostly don't give a shit about what people think about them.
It's apparent in their fashion. In their food and dietery traditions. And in their music.

Fardoche is a singular Montreal man that presents his music in the rawest of all states. A true testament to the ever established bedroom producer, "his sound is not clean as electro house nor nasty as French crunchy electro". He is the perfect sweet medium between the two extremes.
Sure you may hear a faulty bleep or a slowed down boop here and there but the spirit that is bursting out of this Shwatrz eating tabernac is carried through in the warped and beautiful way he intends it too.

A few songs are crunchy and a few songs are dreamy.
Just the way I like it.

beathatching.

So I'm playing at CiRCA again this Friday (tomorrow)
If you squint you can see my name there, Fawn Big Canoe.
My second time in the venue and having a bigger hand in the deal than last time, I decided to invite my friend Matt (Hatchmatik).

Chicago will be in the house that night too as we feature The Beat Freakers.
Two extremely talented guys, will be destroying the turntables as usual.
These guys are such purists, word has it they've JUST decided to make the leap to Serato.
All the best boys.

Seeing as how I'll be playing the upstairs and seeing as how we had the room at capacity + last time, I've been combing through what seems like trillions of mp3s.
Came across a tune by SymbolOne that brought me back to when I would spend hours in the record shops, my feet hurting from standing, my back aching and ears throbbing, then suddenly finding that one "OH!" record.

here it is for me tonight..
don't judge.

i want nothing.

It's my birthday weekend (thank you, thank you).
I've been asked a few times "What do you want for your birthday??"

The things I really want, I could never ask for.
I'll let this tune carry me home through the weekend.

A little bit of self promotion here.

I'm playing tonight at the Launch of the wicked new night in London. Come check it out and I'm sure you won't be disappointed! The cheap drinks and scantily clad (fingers crossed) crowd will ensure that you stay late and then invite us all back to your house for the after party.

Crawling around Camden

This past weekend brought out the great unwashed masses of London for the Camden Crawl. For those of you unfamiliar, this weekend brings over a hundred new bands to Camden's bars for a city festival of sorts. Promotors are teamed with a bar/club and a lottery allocates bands to venues.

A £50 weekend wristband brought us:

Crystal Castles
Does It Offend You, Yeah?
Elle s'appelle
Florence and the Machine
Johnny Foreigner
Ladyhawke
Lets Wrestle
Lo-Fi-Fnk
Los Campesinos!
Metronomy
One Night Only
Operator Please
Sam Sparro
Hadouken!
Ladyhawke
Noisettes
Robyn
Soko
Tronik Youth
Robots In Disguise
And many, many others.

Highlight of my weekend: Crystal Castles.
Disappointment of a lifetime: Robyn

BMX.

Apparently this is what it sounds like when 4 Blue BMX Bikes start a band.
Bigstereo had the good sense to break these guys awhile ago, but I feel the Australians need a bit more coverage, as I hadn't seen their faces/names all over the interweb yet. Hopefully they can parle this fun summer sound of theirs into more than just 2 tunes on a myspace page.
Talk about potential.

This should be on your BMX-riding playlist for reals.

your prada ain't shit.

So, now more than ever I've been more proud than ever to call Toronto my home, what with the talent that has been spewing out of here lately. We've got people like Sta, VND/LSM totally setting the bar high for the dj/producer types and acts like Thunderheist and the much rejoiced Crystal Castles changing how we watch live shows.

I'm currently enamoured with a group named DuoTone.(CLICK THE NAME FOR THE MYSPACE LINKY!!) These guys have taken our idea of sexy, smooth disco rock vocals and slapped it over the chunkiest synths, surprisingly doing all their own vocals, aside from the remixes of course. You can tell they love throbbing bass as much as the next blackcrack junkie and when this shit eventually gets pressed you know it will be better than anything you're hearing digital, although they are definitely marketing to the Serato dj with high quality mp3 files being leaked (but only leaked to me!!!!), as we all know where dj'ing is heading these days...
I'd give my left metaphorical nut to hear this shit on a proper system.
Get 'em while they're hot cuz these shits be EXCLUSIVE!

If I had my way Camera Girls, would have been spread around like a VD at Studio 54 by now...

Lets get the ball rolling, shall we?

The Whitest Boy Alive.

With euro-dream names like Erlend øye, Marcin Oz, Sebastian Maschat and Daniel Nentwig you almost forget these hard-as-nails Germans are behind the fluffy plucked-pop sound on the singles and ep's that group The Whitest Boy Alive have put out.
This is where my extreme jealousy of the european continent kicks in, as they are currently only playing in Prague, Vienna and Munich and making their way to London in May.
Sadly, they apparenly had some US gigs lined up but they were cancelled for what I can only assume was bad ticket sales and not enough promo.
Starting off as an electronica band and slowing morphing into the experimental foursome they are now has been an interesting journey for the boys, but they come out on top most certainly.
I love the fluff.
Cheers to Justin Tyce for the nudge on these Germanians.

Midnight "better when they're remixing" Juggernauts

Photos: Maria Akesson

Catching the Juggernauts on their maiden journey to the UK was too appealing to pass up. The performance was passable, but I expected more after the reviews from musically-spoiled Australian friends. I was definitely left wanting more... which probably wouldn't have been the case had I chosen to see the Neon Neon/Presets/Ladyhawke at Fabric instead.

At least I get to see Ladyhawke at the Camden Crawl.

Record available HERE

*note: support act the cazals do not live up to the hype, however ebony bones gets an A for effort despite the mediocre music.

in her pole.

2 boys meet at New York University.
They make music.
They meet another student that likes new wave shit like Joy Division.
Then another boy comes along and the boys get keyboards and a new dynamic.
Greg leaves and is replaced by Sam.
The boys start touring and land themselves on the BBC in London.
Signed in 2002 and eventually opening for the likes of Robert Smith and the Cure and doing recording sessions with the famed John Peel.
Their music has been described as "achingly beautiful, exlpores emotion...but never ever plays the blues"...

Interpol has been one of my favorite guitar bands for a while. Maybe the smokey, shrill voice of Sam Forgarino or heartbreaking note architecture that gets to me. Either way, I've found myself walking in the rain, lipsynching to Obstacle 1 on more than 8 occasions.

   Photos: Rachel Bevis

In the true spirit of this Toronto/London marriage, Crystal Castles is a perfect topic to fall upon. Insanely popular in the UK at the moment, these Canadians are due for some love from back home. Is there something about a girl screaming into a strobe light that doesn't do it for you?

New album out March 18th. Pre order here. Most anticipated album of 2008? We'll see!

nothing remotely terrible

Sometimes I get a little happy-go-lucky (usually at 1am) and find myself enjoying the sweet melodies of stuff that sounds like billy joel, stevie nicks, and some sort of sweet magical creature from a Terry Gilliam movie.
The perfect marriage of a casio and a drum beat.

bloody well good.

Hard. Hard. Heavy Hard.
These guys remind me of curling and shit...
Bloody Beetroots have been the Italians churning out the hardest remixes the past year and a bit. They somewhat perfected (if not improved) the side-chaining production effect that the French made famous, making all those chunky beats throb at the sound of a bass thump.
Gotta say I wasn't a fan at first - sometimes it can get a little to strobey-rave for me, believe it or not. I guess being the unwavering fan of a good remix that I am, these guys have won me over slowly but surely.
And it makes sense that I love them, as their main influences stem from cartoon sounds and bleeps and bloops from soundtracks and movie scores (love them!!).

Herc

Short and sweet.
Or maybe it's tall and awkward.

Either way, today is about Brooklyn based talent HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR! We are (virtually) celebrating their single BLIND which is released today through DFA.

Their album follows suit in a week and there is plenty of motivation to BUY as bonus material abounds! Word is they are playing this Saturday in Camden. An extra special bonus is that they will be back in the UK at the end of this month and then again in June. Check the flyer above for the DJ set in Vauxall at Horse Meat Disco.

The music reminds me a of a better time. A time of good House. Dreamy and accessible.

(note: big thanks to my friend Emli for turning me on these guys)

cut out all the theory.

Alright,

So this post won't have much to it...
I apologize. Am I running out of steam already??
nahh..
I'm just drawing a blank for a feature artist.....

oh wait a sec..

I'm checking out the Floukids and Swedens Lo-Fi-Fnk at our local mega-club CiRCA this Friday.
Should be a spectacle...I'm looking to be impressed, I'll be honest.
I'm going to judge these guys on a much more brutal scale than I would for oh, say, a certain MSTRKRFT, not for any "hometown heroes" biased opinion, but because I know they aren't much for a killer show. (*Side note for MSTRKRFT: Playing DP's entire song "Too Long" and passing it off as you mixing tunes - not cool.)

But Lo-Fi-Fnk became everyone's new favorite accent-electro group with the tune "City" sometime awhile ago and right now they are planning on hitting up Vancouver, I'm guessing on the same clock as while they are in Toronto. They'll also be hitting up New York, San Fran and Mexico City in the same breath.
Lucky boys!

Melbourne does it better.

If it weren't for this particularly debilitating hangover I would write a proper entry, worthy of the topic at hand.

Cut Copy.

I caught their live gig in Camden last week (but unfortunately missed the one at Fabric where they shared the bill with Simian Mobile Disco and 2 Many DJs!). They are touring around, creating some excitement for their new album Ghost Colours which comes out April 8th. They finished their set with the new track Lights and Music to the sheer delighted of the rather unorthodox crowd.

One thing worth mentioning about the gig, and a questions which perplexed me for the entire night, was why my beloved Cutters were the opening act for the "grindie" band Hadouken! My only guess is their affiliations with Kitsune and the claim that after this tour the youngsters are trading in their guitars for synths. It seems they are eager to jump on the ill-fated nu-rave wagon and using their massive (Atlantic) record label budget to place them in the best place possible, next to Modular talent.

Don't miss your chance to see the boys when they tour North America in the next couple months. Because seriously, I haven't met someone from Melbourne who I haven't adored and these two are no exception.

just another shrimp on the barbie..?

I think not.

Australia is definitley on everyones buzz list these days.
Appropriatly so, a gajillion and three tune and culture blogs have emerged from the land down under, making it hard to be remotely individual and standout.
Charly Banana, over at SYDNEYSOUNDER has found a happy medium between serious quality artist and remixes and fun visual stimuli and culture tidbits.

Dolby Anol

Photo: Rachel Bevis, Live at Ghetto, London

I would say these guys are the best up-and-comer of the year, the only problem being: they have already arrived!

The dirty Glasgow duo have been making their rounds in the UK under the Tiger Bass Label, with a sound that is hard, banging and fantastic live. Their originality is refreshing since these days everyone else is trying to sound like their favourite French (or French-Canadian even) electro veterans.

SO now that I warned you about these guys, I won't feel so bad when they blow up in your face this year. Enjoy these treats you dolby anol virgins.

one, two, check, check...

is this thing on?

Here's the new and hot from London town.
The Slips.
You're going to love them.

Hanging up their Producer hats for the moment these boys have taken to the tables, already being deemed the next Digitalism.

They just released their debut album, "Girls At The Back Up" on the I am Sound label.

They play in London at the end of March and again in April after entertaining the northerners for awhile.

I particularly love Superbeat and the title track Girls At the Back Up...
but I know you all love remixes so I threw in their CSS one.

anything but flat.

Ever since Flat Beat came out with that adorable little electro-muppet in 1999, I've been a fan of Mr. Oizo. Lately he's been keeping a slightly higher, yet modest profile teaming up with the likes of SebastiAn as well as remixing some Calvin Harris and some Scissor Sisters to have that french chunk feel to it.

plus a whack of other shit.

here's a few tunes kiddies.

Kiss You Off (Mr. Oizo Remix) - Scissor Sisters

Patrick 122 (Calling In Sick Remix)- Mr. Oizo

Chivers as a Female - Sebastien Tellier, Mr Oizo & SebastiAn
